Corpus Christi Trip

We went for a short vacation in Corpus Christi this week and I thought I’d create a travelogue of our pictures, plus an experiment of interweaving some external content from Yelp and YouTube in the post. Hopefully this will work in the long term and these links will not rot away over time.

We arrived in Corpus around 4 PM after the 4+ hour drive from Iola. To make optimal time, Monica led me down the coastal route that takes you across the bridge from Portland to North Beach. This is a long, high bridge that triggers my fear of heights that, for whatever reason, is pretty deeply embedded. The high wind did not help my nerves, FYI!

Eventually we made it down to earth and found our AirBnB on North Padre, the Reel Paradise:

After we got settled in, we went in search of dinner, which we took at the Dragonfly on the island:

Monica was starting to feel either a cold or allergy attack coming on, so we called it a night after a visit to CVS. Next morning’s breakfast consisted of Eggo waffles on the patio:

The day’s big activity was a trip to the North Padre Island National Seashore:

We found the park open but unmanned due to this year’s governmental shutdown. Luckily we were able to find a spot out of the direct wind, behind a small dune:

Temperatures in the 70s countered the gray, overcast sky and made for a reasonably pleasant experience despite the high wind. There were lots of dark waves and seagulls eager to get at our snacks, and frolicking in the sea was not for everyone:

By the time we got back to the condo, though, the verdict was in: Monica was officially sick.

That night we debated Doc’s vs. Snoopy’s for local seafood and went with Doc’s. This open-air establishment turned out to have excellent views:

Unfortunately, the high-priced food and drink there proved less-than-ideal fare:

On our second full day we started the day off right with a Mexican breakfast at Las Palmas:

From there we went for a short scenic drive past the waterfront homes on Ocean Drive to the Texas State Aquarium:

On the way back from the aquarium, we decided to remedy the previous night’s poor dinner fare with an appetizer at Snoopy’s, mom’s favorite place in Corpus to get fresh shrimp on the cheap. It was good, but we found a buck a shrimp not so cheap, inflation or no:

After that tasty snack we decided to hit Thai Siam for dinner and go back to the Dragonfly afterward for drinks. The best-laid plans of mice and men, though, do not always work out:

Another trip to CVS followed a long wait at the mom-sans-pop restaurant, but the Thai food proved to be excellent once we got our hands on it. For a change of pace we watched the movie No Reservations, which proved to be OK but not overwhelmingly good.

Our final morning in Corpus started well enough with a surprisingly amazing breakfast at JB’s German Bakery:

Unfortunately, Monica tweaked her trick back while cleaning up the condo for departure. This curtailed the remaining possibilities for the trip, leaving the U.S.S. Lexington, the Selena Museum :), South Texas’ largest flea market, and Texas Southwinds winery for another time.
