Over the weekend I finished reading the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series that I started back in June. This is a pretty good series, written on a small scale, that takes place during the Spanish Civil War and afterward. I’d recommend it without reservation and with moderate enthusiasm. Carlos Ruiz Zafon writes smoothly and occasionally with a subtle flourish that is not often overlong. Books about books can be self-important, but CoFB avoids that by focusing on the mysteries at the heart of the story and keeping the premise at the periphery. Zafon is also known for his young adult fiction and it shows in this series as well as the plots are not overly complex nor overly dark, despite hints and more at the blackness that is all around the characters.
